Three Core Properties
Shared Purpose: (click for the PLE map)

Collaboration and sharing is the key to network learning (Richardson & Mancabelli, 2011); without it, there is often knowledge sharing but not deep learning. The participatory nature of Kollabora connects users with content based on a common purpose and interest to enhance engagement (Reynolds, 2018). As a community that has a global reach and extends across generational barriers, and one which shares the purpose of both pleasure and enjoyment of crafting as well as learning to extend DIY skills and knowledge, Kollabora provides mentors from all walks of life to share their own experiences and skill sets for others to learn from. As such, the knowledge and skills of those who may not typically be recognised in institutionalised learning settings, such as youths, or those who feel they are at times disregarded in society, such as the elderly, have a platform of expertise and power within this community, whilst also developing their own learning (Ito et al., 2013).

The design principle of challenge being constant comes into play and links a sense of a shared purpose to the Interest Driven sphere of learning, as challenge motivates the learner’s purpose of growing their interest or skill by overcoming difficulties and achieving satisfaction of advancement (Ito et al., 2013, p.79). Kollabora offers regular challenges via the ‘Contest’ section of their webpage – these generally generate a large response from users and promotes cross-social platform use, by encouraging users to post their photos with the hashtags to link the projects.
